چکیده
Neurospora crassa mitochondrial deoxyribonucleic acid shows strict uniparental inheritance in sexual crosses, with a notable absence of mixtures and recombinant types that appear frequently in heteroplasmons.

(May 2012) Sameer Rajendra Gajjar Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics Texas A&M University Research Advisor: Dr. Rodolfo Aramayo Department of Biology Crosses between two species of Neurospora are typically sterile and result in the production of non-viable or few viable ascospores. It is unclear what prevents succes...
متن کاملGene Expression Differences among Three Neurospora Species Reveal Genes Required for Sexual Reproduction in Neurospora crassa
Many fungi form complex three-dimensional fruiting bodies, within which the meiotic machinery for sexual spore production has been considered to be largely conserved over evolutionary time. Indeed, much of what we know about meiosis in plant and animal taxa has been deeply informed by studies of meiosis in Saccharomyces and Neurospora. Nevertheless, the genetic basis of fruiting body developmen...
متن کاملDefective production of mitochondrial ribosomes in the poky mutant of Neurospora crassa.
A strain of Neurospora crassa containing a cytoplasmic mutation (poky) affecting mitochondrial function is shown to be deficient in small ribosomal subunits in the mitochondrion during the exponential growth phase. In the stationary growth phase, small subunits are more abundant and are present in mitochondrial ribosomal monomers. This change can be correlated with the return of mitochondrial c...
متن کاملCharacterization of two new plasmid DNAs found in mitochondria of wild-type Neurospora intermedia strains.
Mitochondria from two Neurospora intermedia strains (P4O5-Labelle and Fiji N6-6) were found to contain plasmid DNAs in addition to the standard mitochondrial DNA species. The plasmid DNAs consist of monomeric circles (4.1-4.3 kbp and 5.2-5.3 kbp for Labelle and Fiji, respectively) and oligomers in which monomers are organized as head-to-tail repeats. DNA-DNA hybridization experiments showed tha...
متن کاملThe evolution of the pheromonal signal system and its potential role for reproductive isolation in heterothallic neurospora.
Comparative sequencing studies among a wide range of taxonomic groups, including fungi, provide the overall pattern that reproductive genes evolve more rapidly than other genes, and this divergence is believed to be important in the establishment of reproductive barriers between species. In this study, we investigated the molecular evolution of the pheromone receptor genes pre-1 and pre-2 of st...
